Smith chart or polar plot measurements can now be plotted on a rectangular grid with independent axis control, allowing designers to more easily identify impedances associated with peak performance from load-pull contours.

    • системную диаграмму с блоком созданной ФАР и разверткой переменных для углов THETA/PHI;
    • график с каскадными измерениями параметров с учетом заданной развертки.

Microwave Office.

Design Entry/Management

RF-aware PCB designs include transmission-lines, distributed elements, and surface-mount device models from component vendors, analyzed by circuit/system/EM co-simulation to accurately capture the high-frequency response. Circuit-board electrical behavior is directly linked to the physical attributes of individual components, as well as to the overall layout. Design entry via schematic/layout capture manages the circuit details, while automation and powerful scripting allows PCB designers to reduce manual design entry/editing and excessive data import/export between tools, while enabling tool customization for every special design consideration.

Simulation

Prior to manufacturing, board designs must be verified through computer-aided simulation and analysis. RF/microwave electronics rely on specialized measurements such as noise figure (NF) and small-signal transmission and reflection parameters (S-parameters), as well as their nonlinear power, gain compression, and efficiency response to large-signal stimuli. While transient and time-domain analysis are used for oscillator design and waveform engineering, respectively, most RF PCB analysis relies on frequency-domain HB analysis of nonlinear networks, including power amplifiers (PAs) and frequency converters (mixers).

With the advent of digital modulation for communications systems, designers may also need to analyze PCB-based RF front-ends using circuit envelop analysis to simulate metrics such as adjacent-channel power-ratio (ACPR) and error-vector magnitude (EVM). In addition, dedicated RF link analysis provides a system perspective on the overall performance of multi-component signal paths.

Model Support

Apart from modeling signal traces and distributed components, RF board designs require accurate high-frequency vendor models that capture the parasitics which lead to self-resonance and other non-ideal characteristics. RF-aware design tools should provide component model libraries for commercially available discrete and packaged MMIC/RFIC devices in the form of equivalent (compact) circuit models, S-parameters and/or behavioral models.

Design Verification

Filter Types

Filter Responses

Define a filter response from a desired passband response (low-pass, high-pass, bandpass, or bandstop), filter approximation function (transfer function) from comprehensive list of functions such as Chebyshev, Bessel, Maximally flat, Lagendre, and more, and construction type. For a given response, users can specify the preferred realization technology for the physical filter design.

Distributed

Distributed element filters are obtained by using cascaded-transmission lines, cascaded-coupled lines, or multiple-coupled lines to synthesize the physical layout of shunt-stub bandpass, stepped-impedance resonator, edge-coupled, interdigital, hairpin, and combline bandpass filters. With the user-specified physical stack-up information of the substrate medium, iFilter provides feedback on higher-order modes, surface waves, and line widths for common characteristic impedances.

Lumped Element

Users choose from among the supported filter categories (lumped, narrowband lumped, coupled resonator, and more) for filters based on discrete, lumped-element components (inductors, capacitors) and define the coupling options (inductive/capacitive) for narrowband designs. Response specifications include filter order (N), center frequency, passband corners, bandwidth, insertion loss in the stop-band, shunt inductor value for a lumped, capacitively-coupled resonator bandpass filter, source/load terminations, and more.

Transmission Zeros

The iFilter wizard supports direct definition of transmission zeros or advanced filter designers and provides automated extraction of zeros and implementation of producible transforms.

Lossy or Real

Filter designers have the option to model lumped elements as a simple lossy inductor/capacitor. They can define the self-resonate frequency of an element (such as an inductor with a capacitive effect) to capture real-world parasitics or a commercially-available discrete inductor/capacitor by searching/replacing the ideal elements with a part from the software’s internal vendor database.

Elements can be analyzed using the models selected on the lumped-model options dialog box/realization tab by clicking the design options button (models include real-world vendor data). Elements are mapped using the models selected on the lumped model options dialog box/realization tab by clicking the design options button. If a model does not include self-resonant frequency (SRF), INDQ/CAPQ mapping is used. Real-world vendor data is also mapped according to this criteria.

SQL Access Advisor.

Associated Products

The AWR Design Environment platform provides a single, complete design environment that seamlessly integrates simulation and design technology and manages the circuit/system/EM components within a project, supporting schematic design entry and fully-synchronized physical design and layout.

Microwave Office circuit design software features APLAC multi-rate, transient, and transient-assisted HB, as well as time-variant (circuit envelope) analysis for linear and nonlinear circuit simulation of PAs and low-noise amplifiers (LNAs). Design aids include load-pull analysis, network synthesis (optional), design for manufacturing (optimization, yield, and statistical analysis), device libraries for printed-circuit board (PCB)-based designs, and process design kits (PDKs) for microwave monolithic integrated circuit (MMIC) and RFIC amplifiers.

The AXIEM 3D proprietary full-wave planar EM simulator is based on method-of-moments (MoM) fast-solver technology that readily analyzes on-chip passive structures, transmission lines, interconnects, vias, entire matching networks, and MMIC/RFIC amplifier packaging. Designers can extract S-parameters of passive structures directly embedded in an amplifier design and visualize fields and currents for potential resonances and other parasitics.

Visual System Simulator (VSS) system design software provides virtual test benches that support multiple wireless communications standards for linearity performance metrics such as ACPR and EVM. The software also offers modulation load-pull analysis for optimizing amplifier linearity for PAs.

The Analyst simulator with integrated 3D finite-element method (FEM) EM analysis enables designers to model 3D structures used in PCB- and IC-based amplifiers, including package and board interconnects, via fencing, wire bonds, air bridges, and ball grids.

Network synthesis automatically creates two-port, impedance-matching networks based on proprietary evolutionary EM optimization.

PDKs developed to work with AWR software are available from leading gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium nitride (GaN), and silicon (Si) foundries.

The radar and 5G libraries support communication/radar signal generation and test benches for power amplifier (PA) simulations of radar and 5G communications systems.

The Solution

Micran chose AWR Design Environment with the OMMIC ED02AH pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor (pHEMT) process design kit for this exacting design task because it provides all the technologies needed and offers a user-friendly interface that enabled Micran designers to focus on solving their design problems.

The linear and nonlinear (harmonic balance) simulators in Microwave Office circuit design software were used for the core chip MMIC design. Harmonic balance (HB) was used for the calculation of nonlinear circuit parameters, including output power P1dB in the RX/TX mode, current consumptions, output voltages of the control logic, and more. HB was also used for a bit-by-bit checking of the attenuator, phase shifter, and switches to confirm that all control lines were correctly connected to switch elements. This approach enabled the designers to successfully design this complex MMIC after a single manufacturing iteration. The goal of the second iteration was to decrease the RMS phase error for the phase shifter included in the core chip.
